DON BOSCO COLLEGE

The College
The first-degree college in the province of Dimapur was established at Maram in 2000. It had a very humble beginning with 15 students in the ordinary brick made sheds.  It now has a strength of 2700 (approx.) students, with 2100 in the college and 600 in the Higher Secondary section (Cl. XII only). Out of these 1000 (approx.) are Catholic students, and most others are Christians. There are 16 departments in Arts, Science, Commerce, Computer Science, Social Work and Biotechnology. There are 90 members on the staff both teaching and non-teaching. The college is affiliated to the Manipur University. The college was for the first time accredited by the NAAC in 2009 with ‘B’ grade.

The reaccreditation (2nd Cycle) was done in 2015 and awarded ‘A’ grade with 3.35 points on a scale of 4, as the second best college in North East India. The college also achieved the unique distinction of being awarded the special status of a College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) by the UGC in 2016.

The college is also enriched with the presence of nearly 76 tribes of North East India. There are various groups, movements, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and add-on course to enable the students to face their future. The college is seen by the public as one of the best and most important colleges in the state of Manipur. It has rather excellent infrastructure and is still in the stage of development and it requires much more facilities and infrastructure. The college continues to excel in its academic performance as in the past years and even better by securing 63 ranks in the last university examinations. Another important infrastructural development was the inauguration of Rev. Fr. N. V. Jose memorial multi-purpose auditorium by Shri. N Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of the state in the month of November 2017.

As part of the qualification of the teaching staff, the college has been encouraging and insisting on qualification of the staff as per UGC norms. Today there are 14 Ph.D. holders, 8 who are registered for PhD and 11 who have done M.Phil., or passed NET. As the next stage of development, the college has introduced two post graduate courses in English and Sociology in 2018. Since ours is the  first private college in the university as well as in the state to offer PG courses, the university has changed its norms regarding granting permission to private colleges to introduce such courses.

As per the recommendation of the last NAAC re-accreditation report of 2015 and as part of the progress of the college, we need to move towards securing autonomous status for the college before the third cycle of re-accreditation in the year September 2020. The college is far from having sufficient and necessary infrastructure and requires immediate attention towards meeting these necessities. As part of the planning of the college development and progress, the following infrastructural requirements are being planned:

  • Post Graduate Hostels
  • Canteen facilities
  • Staff Rooms
  • Staff Quarters
  • Residence
  • Guest House
  • More class rooms for the graduates
  • Toilets for the Graduate students (Boys)
  • Science Block

The Hostels
There is one boys’ hostel and four girls’ hostels run by four different Congregations (FMA, FCC, SMMI and Vedruna). All together there are about 500 girls and 175 boys in the college hostels. Besides there are several private hostels where our students stay and attend college.

Additional Services
The college also offers various additional services that the students can profit from:

  • IGNOU courses offered from the Campus
  • Skill development courses for the unemployed youth under DB Tech and Pradhan Mantri Kausal Kendra.
  • Outreach activities, clubs, groups and movements by the college students
  • Is in the process of introducing coaching classes for competitive exams from the 1st year itself. This is aimed at producing IAS, IPS and MCS within 3 years’ time.
  • MOU signed with number of institutions in India for exchange programmes.
